Mike's EV Ramblings

Personal Duty?

Until you ride as a passenger, or better yet, drive it – you really have no idea what its like. Most people expect all sorts of weirdness or poor performance.
Which made me realize the one thing I initially missed about owning an electrically motivated car.
It becomes your unspoken duty to take people for a drive.
Maybe just volunteer to drive on the lunch run, or be the designated driver one evening. Almost every person who sits in your car will say “oh, this is electric, cool”.

Charging time

It seems that every time I read an article about driving electric, the time to charge is raised. That apart from the other “range” one.
Thing is, most of these articles are not written by owners. Just by reviewers who miss the point.
Actually, there are two really important points they are completely missing….. Read More…

Range ?

Just read a really interesting article about EV driving/battery range over on one of my goto sites Cleantechnica (opens in new tab).
Zach always writes interesting stuff and this one is no exception. It has lots of charts and graphs and makes extremely valid points.
But I think he misses the main reason folks talk about range. Read More…

Range? Part deux

My last post was concerning an article I read on CleanTechnica that more range wan’t really needed.
I had too much to say and too little space to say it, so here are some more thoughts on why more range is a requirement for the wider acceptance of electric vehicles to happen.

What is the one thing most manufactureres are missing

They think they are just making cars.
That sounds like an odd thing to say, so let me explain. Read More…

Two Years with the LEAF

Coming up on my two-year anniversary with my Leaf and thought it would be interesting to look over how driving electric has gone.

Replacing my LEAF

Still have another year to run with my Leaf, but the boy scout in me means that I’m getting ready for when I have to hand him back.
In my last article I rambled (that is the title of the blog after all) on about what worked and what didn’t regarding my Leaf ownership.
While reading it back a while later I noticed that I mostly rambled in a negative way, but today I’m a little more positive.

It finally happened

After two years and 26,000 miles or so, my Leaf has just lost its very first bar of battery capacity.
I was wondering when it would happen. I have a round trip commute of about 50 miles which often extends to 60 miles and I am not driving an EV to drive like a 90-year-old granny.

Will the Tesla Model ☰ be built like this?

After lots of interesting developments since the Tesla Model preview V1 event, the thought occurred to me that Tesla is about to change the auto industry again.
When the Model was first shown to the public and the dust settled, it was obvious that Tesla (Elon?) had decided that they would be installing all the hardware needed for both Supercharging and Autopilot. This seemed normal at the time because that is how Model S is delivered.

How did I miss this?

I can’t believe I took so long to get back to writing about reserving our Tesla Model 3 – now mostly styled as ☰ (funny that this has returned to 3)
Yes, we stood in line with about four hundred (yes 400) other about-to-be-Tesla-owners surrounding the Tesla gallery* in Austin.
